Dishwashers make our life so easy. However, it is important to know that some items should never be washed in the dishwasher. While most everyday kitchenware generally is safe for dishwashers, there are items that are best washed by hand.

Always check for dishwasher-safe markings on your dishes. Dishwasher detergents are highly alkaline and can damage some fragile materials. There are also items that cannot withstand high heat and water pressure. Read on to learn which kitchenware to avoid putting in the dishwasher.

Cast iron, enameled cast iron

Harsh detergents, in combination with high water pressure and temperature, will remove the necessary thin oil layer, that cast iron forms over time, and that gives its non-stick properties.

Antique, metal-rimmed and had painted kitchenware and fine china

Thin plastic

Hard plastic items can be placed in dishware if are indicated as “dishwasher safe”. Always place such items on the top rack. Items from thin plastic and disposable items should not be washed in a dishwasher since they run the risk of melting.

Wooden items

The high temperature and humidity in the dishwasher can cause swell, warp, or crack on wooden kitchenware.

Silver items

The silver metal could react with some ingredients in dishwasher detergents which can lead to tarnishing.

Sharp knives

The dishwasher can dull knife blades, so better to wash your high-quality and expensive knives by hand.

Pressure cooker lids

Thin particles of food or detergent could jam the lid’s safety valves, which could lead to serious malfunctioning or safety issues.
